Internet Ghosts: Part 135
6/5: Backrooms, Taylor Swift and Toy Story, the DoorDash Fairy and more...
A bit of the internet:
Jujutsu Kaisen | This week, the internet has been pulling off a little anime magic with an editing trend inspired by Jujutsu Kaisen. The setup is simple, serve a few dramatic moves, hit a sharp jolt transition, and suddenly a treat appears in hand.
It’s quick, weirdly satisfying, and just the right amount of chaotic. Some of our favorite edits so far include Megan Thee Stallion, Dom Dolla & more.Backrooms | The internet has turned into the backrooms as the new A24 movie finally hit theaters this week, with many brands joining in on the fun. This is one of a few movies this year led by a Gen Z director and connected deeply to internet lore. If you’re seeing yellow all over your feed, just keep calm and walk right through the wall.
Sound of Water vs. Sound of... | People compare the feeling of plain water to more exciting drinks by stirring a glass of water in silence, then cutting to a louder, more satisfying drink as the music drops. We’ve seen it for iced coffees, cocktails, and energy drinks. While the format started with beverages, creators are increasingly using it as a metaphor. Some are comparing other experiences like the sound of repeat 200s vs. the sound when they finally pay off and you PR.
My ___ is ___ | In this TikTok trend, people are supporting their loved ones, while poking fun at their niche jobs. In a carousel format, they list what one might consider a “normal job,” before intensely describing the job of their loved ones. These somewhat more specific jobs have ranged from ice cream scooper to catheter salesman to stage manager.
What brands are up to:
A Snickers focus group full of Reeses | Snickers is taking aim at Reese’s this week with a new campaign promoting its peanut butter products. It kicked off with a focus group spot featuring participants all named Reese, who are prompted to say they prefer Snickers’ peanut butter offering over Reese’s candy. On social, the brand is extending the campaign through creator partnerships, bts of the ad, and a sweepstakes offering a year’s supply of product to anyone named Reese. Make sure to check out Reese's responses as well.
DoorDash Fairy | What’s better than food delivery? Food delivery that arrives by fairy, probably. DoorDash’s hilariously absurd “DoorDash Fairy” meme has taken over social feeds this week, racking up engagement across X and Instagram. As part of the brand’s World Cup campaign, the Fairy is surprising and delighting fans with DoorDash credits to order food for their watch parties. Fans comment on DoorDash’s posts to participate, creating the perfect way for the brand to connect directly with soccer fans. (Fairy appearances not guaranteed).
God of War Laufey announcement | Playstation's God of War video game franchise announced a new spinoff game where for the first time users will play as a female character. The decision to spotlight the Goddess Laufey has sparked fresh conversations across the gaming world, fueling debate around female representation in video games while also inspiring a wave of playful crossover content. Fans of Laufey, the pop artist, were surprised to find themselves suddenly intersecting with the more violent side of gaming culture, leading to plenty of jokes and memes online.
